From the Humane Society - Stop Puppy Mills FAQ page:

5. I think my local pet store might be selling dogs from puppy mills. How can I find out?
Most pet store puppies come from puppy mills.
Ask the pet store employee to show you the
paperwork identifying the puppy's breeder and origins.
If he or she refuses to do so or is reluctant to
show you the paperwork, consider that a red flag.
If you do inspect the paperwork, you may notice that
the puppy has been shipped from out of state, often by a "broker" service.
These are just a few indications that the store's dog may have come from a puppy mill.
The bottom line is that responsible breeders do not sell dogs
through pet stores, because they want to personally meet and interview the person who will be caring for their puppy.

Personality Bio
I can't imagine what you'd like to know - so how
'bout I just fill out one of those great
"Get to Know You" email's we've all gotten...
.
.

1. What time do you get up?   My alarm goes off at 2am…I get up immediately sometime
within the three hours that follow.

2. If you could eat lunch with one person, who would it be?  Katherine Hepburn.
I would say my Dad who recently passed away – but lunch just wouldn’t be enough.

3. Gold or silver?  This is such a dumb question. I don't even know what
they think you're going to glean from this....so, nothing personal - but
I'm not going to answer that one.

.
.....Am I the only one that doesn't like the incomplete sentences on "get to know you"
questionnaires like this??.....moving on.....

4. What was the last film you saw at the cinemaThe Cinema? Uh, gosh – I think
the last Film I saw at the The Cinema was…*sheesh* I’m not answering
such a pompous question.  “The Cinema”…my Aunt Fanny.

5. What is your favorite TV show?
Bones. Hands down. Looking forward to the return of Pushing Daisies,
Dirty Sexy Money, and well, a few others
I've been missing since the writers strike cut short last season.

.

6. What do you have for breakfast?    Jim Finn and I have given up on taking turns
bringing in breakfast (his idea)
so now it's cereal in bed
while I watch the early news and invariably spill milk on the sheets.
.
7. Who would you hate to be stuck in a room with?   A pessimist.

8. Who inspires you?  Santa Claus and Ebenezer Scrooge.

9.  What is your middle name?

12. Butter, plain or salted popcorn?  Butter and salt please – but not too much

13. Favorite color?  Purple and all it’s many shades

14. What kind of car do you drive?  A brand new, very trusty one that I love dearly.
It's SO fun to have a stick again.....vroom, vroom!

15. Favorite sandwich?   My Mom’s ham sandwich.
Very simple but somehow she always has the freshest bread.
Runner up fav. sandwich is probably something like the The Geeter at Erbert & Gerbert’s.

16. What characteristic do you despise?  A closed mind.

17. Favorite flower?   A nice softly colored pink peony.

18. If you could go anywhere in the world where would you go?   Everywhere.

20. Favorite brand of clothing?   Eddie Bauer….excellent quality wardrobe basics.

in the movie Practical Magic seemed very nice.

22. Favorite day of the week?    What am I, 12-years old?  Favorite day of the week…

23. What did you do for your last birthday?   Turned 42.
I don't consider turning a year older any sort of particular feat that needs to be reveled in.

24. Where were you born?   Twin Cities, Minnesota

25. Favorite sport to watch:   Is demolition derby officially a sport?
No?  Then Baseball – great when in the stands…great when
dozin’ on the couch on a summer afternoon.   It’s good either way.

I love cars - so the Indy 500 is great – but it only comes once and year
and jealousy sneaks in when I watch (I’m a frustrated racer) so it's bittersweet.

26. Who do you least expect to send this back to you?  A stick in the mud

27. Person you expect to send it back first?   The person with a sense of
humor who gets
what's going on here. DO IT! (copy this - put in your own answers and email me!)

28. What fabric detergent do you use?   I've given up on Downy with
Febreeze in it 'cuz
it just aggrivates my noggin'. So....it's usually a fragrance/dye free detergent or ALL.

.

29.Coke or Pepsi?   Coke.  Cream Soda or Ginger Ale really,
but they weren’t given as an option, were they?

30. Are you a morning person or a night owl?    Ha, ha!  Yeah, morning person.

31. What is your shoe size?   Excuse me?  Why don’t you just ask
how much I weigh while you’re at it.  How rude.

32. Do you have any pets?  I've adopted two cats from the Eau Claire County
Humane Association.
Monty - is a total rock star! Awesome personality,
acts like a dog - but attacks my face in the night so now they're
banished from the bedroom.

Miss Priss - is...well, a priss. (hence the name,
if it weren't so fitting I would have picked a cooler name).

It was really hard to decide to get another pet after my dog died back
in January of '07. No one will ever fill the void she left

Some day I may get another dog - but I don't feel like I have
the time to give one right now...but they are awesome, awesome pets.

33. What is your dream car?  The 1936 Delahaye 135 Competition
Court Figoni & Falaschi Coupe.

34. Favorite vegetable?   It used to be potatoes. But since learning that they hype up
your glycemic index and turn everything in to fat I'm rather peeved at them.
My new favorite vegetable has yet to be decided...that's a big decision. Stay tuned.

35. Last book you read or are reading?   Admittedly I’m not much of a
“reader” – the last book was read was The DaVinci Code.
If every book were as compelling – I’d be a bookworm.
And I frequently visit - Dear Professor Einstein: Albert Einstein's Letters
to and from Children.   Very interesting...a suprising look at Einstein.

36. First thing you do when you wake up?   Hit the snooze bar and
think to myself – “Really?  Already?   I need to go to bed earlier tonight….”

700 Dogs
Rescued From Puppy Mill

The Humane Society of the United States rescued over 700 dogs from a massive puppy mill in Tennessee this past week.

This is a happy video because it shows the empty cages - but this link will take you to the HSUS site where you can see more videos.  The ones that are hard to watch - the videos from when they first arrived on the scene.

It's important for you to know that Wisconsin is very quickly becoming one of the largest puppy mill producing states in the country.  No lie.   When you're driving down one of our many country roads, and you see a pole barn in the distance, it could be a puppy mill.  Really.  A puppy mill is easy to hide in our rolling hills that are covered with lush trees.

I'm not being dramatic.  It's a cold hard fact.

People who run puppy mills don't pay taxes.  You know who else doesn't pay taxes?   That's right....drug dealers and pornographers.  Drug dealers, pornographers, and the person who bred your dog.

Puppy mills are totally unregulated.

There are links over on the left hand side of this page.  Please.   Please learn more about puppy mills.   When you've read more about it - I think you'll feel the same way I do.

Besides the fact that we have a pet overpopulation problem already, the animals that come from puppy mills are NOT healthy, sound dogs.  The problems might not show up right away....it might be years down the road before the results of bad breeding kick in.   Puppy mills are just bad business.

Look back in my journal entries to when the Eau Claire County Humane Association had their annual banquet - Eileen Ribbens of the Wisconsin Puppy Mill Project was the speaker.  Fascinating.

Talk to your representatives!   Let them know it matters to you!  Let them know you want to put an end to puppy mills in Wisconsin.

Representative Jeff Smith and Senator Pat Kreitlow were both at the banquet and recognized the importance of putting an end to puppy mills and pledged support - THANK YOU!!    Terry Moulton came to the banquet that night but then left before it started....I don't know what that was all about - but - well,  whatever.

Colorado has the best laws in the nation regarding puppy mills -- some say "we're not ready for that"  -- but I say...ready or not...here we come!   Let's shoot for the stars.

THIS SUNDAY is the Chippewa Valley Chapter of The American Red Cross' Garden Stroll!!

Not only is it a chance to get an up close look at six of the most beautiful gardens in the Chippewa Falls area - but all the proceeds from the Garden Stroll go to support the LOCAL Chippewa Valley chapter of the Red Cross.  The money stays right here - helping our neighbors when they need it most.

They're quiet...they don't make a big show out of what they do - they just do it.  The Red Cross is always right there in times of trouble....you don't even have to ask...they show up - Angels of Mercy.   Whether it's helping a family find a place to sleep for the night after fire has taken their home or providing comfort to firefighters as they battle the blaze - the Red Cross is there.   The Red Cross is helping flood victims in southern Wisconsin and Iowa.  ...Helping them figure out where to start picking up the pieces....

Your $10 donation will go to help the Red Cross in our area continue their great work and programs.

Did you know that in the last fiscal year (July 1, 2006 to June 30, 2007) the Chippewa Valley Chapter of the Red Cross provided emergency assistance after a disaster (like a house fire)  to 356 people?   That's almost one person every day in just emergency assitance - that's not counting the others who are helped through different programs.

The ticket includes refreshments served at Landmark Christian Church and can be purchased at Gordy's County Markets and Tru Value Stores in downtown Chippewa Falls and Lake Wissota locations, Mega Foods in Chippewa Falls, and at Red Cross offices in Chippewa Falls and Altoona.  Call: 715-723-4655 for more info.

Gettin' Hitched?

Want Fido Or Fifi As Part Of The Proceedings?

Pawsitively Purrfect Products has developed the Pet Petal Pullcart!  A lightweight cart you can 'hitch' your dog to, which dispenses flower petals down the aisle as they walk!  Watch the video - TOO CUTE

If you're thinking ...."sure that's cute - but then what?"  Well - I say the uses are limited only by your imagination!   Imagine the next Doll and Pet Parade down on Water Street!  You could hitch your dog up and fill the thing with candy!  No more worrying about hittin' kids with Tootsie Rolls by throwing them out -- gently dispense them right on the street!   Man - these folks could make a killing by marketing these to Shriners.

Dedication.....

Saw this incredible video on the very, very early morning news.  Don't know if they've run it during more normal hours (ha, ha) but knew it was just so incredible that it couldn't be missed - I HAD to share this with you.

These amazing airmen watching over a funeral at Arlington National Cemetery (6/4/08) didn't even FLINCH as a torrential downpour and wild, driving winds tore throught the area.  Not even when a hat does flying do they move a muscle.   Astounding

Honestly - I can't fathom how they were able to stay so still?!!!  Not even the pressure of the wind moved them....total muscle control.  Man...talk about "abs of steel"

By the way - the link takes you to YouTube.com....afraid we have no control over what comments people may leave under any given video or what you may see if you look elsewhere on their site, so please keep that in mind.

WHOA.

Look at that adorable little boy.

He has Aspberger's Syndrome.

His teacher humiliated him in front of his class, had each child say what they didn't like about him, and then "voted him out" of the class - Survivor-style. I don't like what that teacher is teaching.   Read the story.

Well, it's about time.

Hey, George....the number's (715) 836-9898.

Let's talk soon.

**Slurp**   Yummmm.......

Time to dust off the picnic basket!

Autumn Harvest Winery opens for the season tomorrow!

MaryKay McIlquam of Autumn Harvest Winery will be live in the studio with Jim and me during the morning show at 7:30 on Tuesday mornings.   Make sure you join us for a little 'wine tasting' and the latest news from Autumn Harvest Winery.

A growing local winery - Autumn Harvest Winery has wonderful variety of wines...from the bright and clean favorite Northern Lights (an apple wine) to a dry red Pinot Noir.  The Autumn Harvest wine selection includes blackberry, elderberry, black raspberry, sweet apple wines and more.

They also feature locally made cheeses from Yellowstone Cheese in Cadott!  (Ask Yellowstone about the 2008 World Championship Cheese contest!)

The orchard makes a lovely setting for a picnic - so bring lunch and your friends and family - spend the afternoon enjoying some of the best the Chippewa Valley has to offer!

My Mom has a favorite winery near Hastings, MN. called Alexis Bailly.  Their Open House always seems to take place the same weekend as my Mom's birthday so we always make the trip.  It's WONDERFUL to enjoy a glass of wine on the patio and soak in a beautiful spring day....I encourage you to start your own tradition!
